Myositis is inflammation of your skeletal muscles, which are also called the voluntary muscles. These are the muscles you consciously control that help you move your body. An injury, infection or autoimmune disease can cause myositis.
The diseases dermatomyositis and polymyositis both involve myositis. Polymyositis causes muscle weakness, usually in the muscles closest to the trunk of your body. Dermatomyositis causes muscle weakness, plus a skin rash. Both diseases are usually treated with prednisone, a steroid medicine, and sometimes other medicines.
'''Inclusion body myositis''' (IBM) is an inflammation muscle disease characterized by slowly progressive wasting and weakness of upper extremities. Although there is profound inflammation (invasion of muscle tissue with white blood cells and related substances like antibody and complements) in the muscle tissue just as observed in other inflammatory autoimmune disorders of the muscle (e.g. polymyositis), the cause does not seem to be autoimmunity. Additionally, in contrast with polymyositis the disease affects men more than women. Symptoms usually begin after 50 years of age.
